Strange Encounters of the Suburban Kind
Feral deer that roam my neighborhood are the main subject of the series, Strange Encounters of the Suburban Kind. Frontal flash gives them a frozen "in the headlights" appearance, and their eyes an unworldly spherical glow. There is an unsettling clash between a large number of wild animals and a quiet suburban setting; they are an alien presence waiting in the dark.
Please note that the deer are undisturbed by having their photo taken, and I do not feed them.
Our Main Competitor is Sleep
CEO Reed Hastings claimed in 2017 that Netflix's biggest rivals were not other streaming services, or even other forms of entertainment, but sleep itself. Hastings encouraged binge watching without limits, and staying up late to satiate an addiction to a show.
The triptych Our Main Competitor is Sleep, is part of a larger body of work addressing the transformation of society due to the pervasiveness of digital technology. My work invites audiences to reconsider how the internet affects their moods, viewpoints, and relationships. I coax the viewer to consider the ethics and legality of how companies use the web to gather personal data and affect human behavior. My works create an eerie atmosphere that reflects the voyeuristic practices of digital platforms, as they mine information about their users and monetize human attention. I speculate a future where the power of tech companies remain unchecked by government oversight. You can view more pieces from this body of work here.
